Frequently asked questions

What does FMJ mean?

FMJ means Full Metal Jacket. The bullet’s lead core is enclosed by a metallic jacket, reducing deformation and supporting consistent feeding. This construction is primarily used for training, competition and target shooting.

What does “bulk” mean in the product name?

Bulk identifies the larger 50-round package. The cartridges are supplied and sold as one complete Sellier & Bellot factory box.

Do .30-06 SPR. and .30-06 Springfield refer to the same calibre?

Yes. The markings .30-06 SPR., .30-06 Springfield and 30-06 Spring. refer to the same cartridge. Ammunition must still be used only in a serviceable firearm whose calibre marking confirms compatibility with .30-06 Springfield.

How does a 147-grain bullet differ from a 180-grain load?

This 147-grain load has a muzzle velocity of 890 m/s. A 180-grain cartridge can produce different recoil, trajectory and point of impact. The more suitable option depends on the rifle, shooting distance and intended application.

Is this FMJ load suitable for hunting?

Sellier & Bellot states that FMJ bullets can be used for certain hunting applications, but an FMJ projectile normally does not expand like an SP, SPCE, PTS or other purpose-designed hunting bullet. Confirm all local bullet-construction, calibre and energy requirements before hunting. Its primary application is training and target shooting.

Can it be used in an M1 Garand or another semi-automatic rifle?

Compatibility should not be determined from calibre alone. The pressure curve and the firearm manufacturer’s requirements can be important with older rifles or specialised gas systems. Use this ammunition only when the firearm manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith has confirmed compatibility.

Should the rifle’s zero be checked after switching from hunting ammunition?

Yes. Bullets of different weights, velocities and construction can produce different points of impact from the same rifle. Confirm the zero at an appropriate shooting range before training or competition.

When is S&B .30-06 SPR. FMJ 9.55 g the right choice?

This cartridge is a practical option for .30-06 Springfield owners who need a conventional 147-grain FMJ load for regular training. The 50-round box is particularly convenient for higher-volume range sessions and reduces the number of small packages required.

When training with a hunting rifle, compare this FMJ load’s point of impact with the hunting ammunition normally used. A similar point of impact at the selected distance can make the transition between training and hunting loads easier. Hunting still requires a bullet construction appropriate to the quarry and applicable regulations.

Expert recommendation

Before purchasing a larger quantity, test the ammunition from the intended rifle with several five-shot groups. Confirm accuracy, reliable functioning and the difference in point of impact compared with the hunting load normally used. Bullets weighing 147 and 180 grains can produce noticeably different results from the same rifle.

Use the ammunition only in a serviceable firearm approved for .30-06 Springfield. Store cartridges in a cool, dry and locked location, and never use ammunition that is corroded, deformed or otherwise damaged.
