Frequently Asked Questions

What does Special Slug mean?

Special Slug is a smoothbore cartridge with a single solid projectile. Unlike a regular buckshot cartridge, it does not contain multiple pellets, but one 32-gram slug with a stabilizer designed by Sellier & Bellot.

Can this cartridge be used in a 12/76 firearm?

In general, a shorter 12/70 cartridge can be used in a 12/76 chamber, but only if the firearm manufacturer allows the use of single slug ammunition. The compatibility of the barrel and choke must also be checked.

Can the cartridge be used in a firearm with a 12/67.5 chamber?

No. A 12/70 cartridge must not be used in a shorter 67.5 mm chamber. The firearm’s chamber must be at least as long as the cartridge length marked on the cartridge.

Is Special Slug suitable for use with a full choke?

Use only a choke that is approved by the manufacturer for single slug ammunition. In many firearms, a cylinder or slightly constricted choke is preferred for slug cartridges, but specific compatibility must always be confirmed in the firearm and choke manuals.

Are Special Slug and Special Slug Sport the same cartridge?

No. Special Slug V051732 uses a 32-gram slug and has a manufacturer’s velocity of 420 m/s. Special Slug Sport V051962 uses a 28-gram slug and has a velocity of 410 m/s. Recoil, point of impact, and accuracy may differ between the cartridges.

Is a smoothbore slug cartridge as accurate as a rifle cartridge?

Generally, no. A single slug allows for more accurate shooting with a smoothbore than shot, but its trajectory, velocity retention, and practical shooting distance differ from a rifle cartridge. Accuracy depends significantly on the specific firearm and ammunition.

For which game species is the cartridge suitable?

Suitability depends on the game species, shooting distance, and current hunting regulations. Before hunting, check whether the use of a single slug is allowed for the respective game and hunting method, and whether the cartridge’s energy meets the requirements.

Does the firearm need to be zeroed separately with this cartridge?

Yes. Slug cartridges from different manufacturers, with different designs or weights, may hit different points from the same firearm. The point of impact must be checked with the exact load and ammunition lot you intend to use.

When is S&B .12/70 Special Slug 32 g the right choice?

This cartridge is suitable for users of 12-gauge smoothbore firearms who want a classic 32-gram single slug load for hunting or target shooting. The standard 70 mm case allows it to be used in many modern firearms with 12/70 and 12/76 chambers, provided the firearm manufacturer allows slug cartridges.

Special Slug Sport 28 g may be more suitable for sporting practice when a lighter slug is preferred. Special Slug 12/76 32 g offers a higher manufacturer’s velocity but requires a firearm with at least a 76 mm chamber. The point of impact of each variant must be confirmed separately.

Expert recommendation

With single slug cartridges, compatibility between the firearm and ammunition is especially important. Test your chosen load with groups of at least three shots and check the point of impact at realistic distances. A single good hit does not guarantee consistent accuracy.

Before shooting, check the firearm’s caliber, chamber length, and choke compatibility. The slug projectile maintains a dangerous range much farther than regular small shot, so always use a secure backstop and ensure a safe shooting direction.
