Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 16/65 cartridge be used in a 16/70 firearm?

A shorter 16/65 cartridge may be suitable in a firearm with a 16/70 chamber of the same caliber if the firearm manufacturer's manual allows it. Always check the firearm’s markings, technical condition, and manufacturer’s instructions.

Can a slug cartridge be used with any choke?

Not automatically. Permitted chokes and barrels depend on the firearm’s design. Always check the manufacturer’s manual or consult a qualified gunsmith before use.

How does a slug cartridge differ from a shot cartridge?

A slug cartridge fires a single large projectile. A shot cartridge forms a cluster of many small pellets, so their intended use and ballistics are different.

Should the firearm be zeroed with this cartridge?

Yes. The point of impact and spread of slug cartridges can vary significantly between firearms. Accuracy should be confirmed at an authorized shooting range at realistic distances.

When is the S&B 16/65 Special Slug the right choice?

The Special Slug is a suitable choice for 16 gauge smoothbore firearms when the circumstances and legal regulations allow the use of a single projectile cartridge. The 65 mm case also makes it relevant for older 16/65 firearms in proper condition, with the approval of the manufacturer or a gunsmith.

For bird and small game hunting where a shot pattern is needed, an appropriate shot cartridge should be chosen. If the firearm’s accuracy with a slug cartridge does not meet expectations, try a different load, as compatibility between smoothbore firearms and slugs can be very firearm-specific.

Recommendations

We recommend conducting test shots from a stable rest and at several realistic distances before using in hunting. The accuracy of a slug cartridge in a smoothbore firearm depends strongly on the barrel, sights, choke, and specific load. The velocity stated on the packaging alone does not guarantee the cartridge suits your firearm or will provide the desired point of impact.

Check the firearm’s caliber and chamber markings and do not use the cartridge in a firearm that is damaged or of unclear origin. If the firearm has an interchangeable choke, ensure according to the manual that it is suitable for use with a single projectile. When hunting, always check the caliber, energy, and bullet type requirements for the specific game. For older 16 gauge shotguns, it is advisable to have the firearm’s condition assessed by a gunsmith.
