Frequently Asked Questions

What are HD Split Ring Pliers XL used for?

The pliers are primarily intended for opening split rings, changing lure hooks, and cutting braided line, monofilament, and fluorocarbon.

How does the XL model differ from the 16 cm L version?

The XL model is 19 cm long and weighs 171 g. The longer construction provides more grip area when working with larger rings and heavier lures. The L model is 16 cm long, weighs 107 g, and takes up less space in the lure bag.

Can the pliers cut hooks or steel wire?

The manufacturer specifies the cutting edge for use with braided line, monofilament, and fluorocarbon. For cutting hooks, thick metal wire, or steel leaders, use a cutter designed for that purpose.

Are the pliers suitable for use in saltwater?

Yes. According to the manufacturer, the tool is suitable for use in saltwater and the steel features SaltShield96 protection. After saltwater fishing, the pliers should be rinsed with fresh water and thoroughly dried.

When is the Westin HD Split Ring Pliers XL the right choice?

The 19 cm XL model is ideal for anglers who regularly maintain large pike, jerkbait, or saltwater lures. The longer handles provide more control when opening stronger split rings, and the larger tool fits securely in the hand.

For small perch and trout lures or fine rings, the more compact 16 cm L model may be more precise and convenient. For removing hooks from a fish's mouth, long hook removal pliers are recommended, as HD Split Ring Pliers are primarily designed for working with lures, rings, and lines.

Our recommendation

Use only the special tip of the pliers for opening rings. Open the ring as little as needed to install the hook or attachment eye, as excessive bending may leave the ring permanently open and reduce connection strength. Replace any deformed or rusted ring.

Cut braided line, monofilament, or fluorocarbon with the central part of the serrated cutting edge. Do not use the blade for cutting hooks, steel leaders, or thick wire, as such use may damage the cutting edge or alter the alignment of the pliers.

After use in saltwater, rinse the tool with fresh water and dry the joint and cutting edge. Store the pliers in a dry tool pocket or secure them in the boat with a safety cord. Regularly check that the ring opener tip is not bent and that the cutting edge closes evenly.

XL-size ring opener and line cutter

The Westin HD Split Ring Pliers XL combine a split ring opener, serrated line cutter, and SaltShield96 treatment for saltwater use in a 19 cm construction. These are practical pliers for maintaining larger lures and making stronger rigs.
