Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose 29 cm XL pliers?

The longer tool provides greater reach and helps keep your hands further from the fish’s teeth and any free hooks on the lure. This is especially useful when dealing with large pike or deeply set hooks.

Are XL pliers also suitable for smaller fish?

Yes, but the 29 cm length may be more cumbersome when handling small perch or trout compared to the 24 cm M-model. The main advantage of the XL version is for larger predatory fish.

Can the pliers be used in saltwater?

Yes. According to the manufacturer, they are suitable for use in saltwater. After use, rinse the tool with fresh water, dry the joint, and store the pliers in a dry place.

Do the pliers have a line or hook cutter?

The manufacturer’s description does not mention a cutter. These are hook removal pliers, so for cutting strong hooks, wire, or braided line, a separate suitable cutter should be used.

When is the Westin Unhooking Pliers XL 29 cm the right choice?

The 29 cm XL model is a good choice for targeted pike and other large predator fishing. The extra length helps you reach deeper into the fish’s mouth and keeps your hands away from sharp teeth and free hooks on the lure.

If you mainly fish for perch, trout, or smaller predators and value a more compact tool, the 24 cm M-model may be more convenient. For regularly handling especially large pike, the same series offers a 41 cm XXL version for even more reach.

Recommendations

Before removing the hook, secure the fish in a landing net or on a handling mat and check the position of all lure hooks. Long pliers reduce the need to put your hand in the fish’s mouth but do not eliminate the risk of injury. Grasp the hook firmly and avoid sudden movements that could injure the fish or angler.

Keep a separate strong hook cutter in your gear. If the hook is deep or normal removal would cause excessive harm to the fish, cutting the hook may be a safer solution.

After using the pliers in saltwater, rinse with fresh water and dry the joint thoroughly. Before your next outing, check that the tool moves freely and the handle is intact. Do not use the pliers as a lever or for cutting strong hooks unless the manufacturer has specified such a function.
