Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the Handgun Smart Mat?

The work surface of the mat is approximately 48.3 × 40.6 cm or 19 × 16 inches. It is designed to accommodate a disassembled handgun and its components.

Is the mat only suitable for one pistol model?

No. This is a general-purpose pistol maintenance mat without a specific model assembly diagram. It can be used with many pistols and revolvers.

Is the mat resistant to gun oil and cleaning agents?

The surface is oil-resistant and helps protect your workbench from maintenance chemicals. However, spilled substances should be removed promptly, and before use, make sure the chemicals are compatible with the mat and firearm materials.

Is the parts tray removable?

The manufacturer describes it as a parts tray attached to the mat. It should be used as an integrated part and not forcibly removed from the mat.

Are tools included?

No. The set includes the maintenance mat and its parts tray. Cleaning supplies, tools, and firearms must be selected separately.

When is the Real Avid Handgun Smart Mat the right choice?

The Handgun Smart Mat is suitable if you maintain various handguns and want a work area that is not model-specific. The integrated parts tray is helpful when fully disassembling a pistol for user maintenance, as small pins and springs can be kept separate from the main area.

If you mainly maintain a single Glock or 1911 model and want a printed assembly diagram on the mat, choose a platform-specific maintenance mat. For long guns, the 109.2 × 40.6 cm Universal Smart Mat is more suitable.

Recommendations

We recommend placing the mat on a clean, flat surface before starting work. Remove the magazine and ammunition from the firearm, check the chamber, and keep all ammunition away from the work area. Place parts on the tray in the order they are removed to make reassembly easier.

Use the main area of the mat for the slide, frame, and tools, and the parts tray for pins, springs, and screws. Do not leave aggressive cleaning agents on the mat for a long time. Wipe off residues after maintenance and let the mat dry completely before rolling it up.

If the mat has metal shavings or soot, remove them before placing finished gun parts on it. This way, the soft work surface will not become abrasive or scratch the exterior of the firearm.
