Frequently Asked Questions

What types of knives is the Smith’s Diamond Retractable suitable for?

The sharpener is suitable for maintaining straight and serrated edge pocket, hunting, outdoor, sport, and utility knives. The sharpening angle should be chosen according to the knife manufacturer’s recommendation.

How to sharpen a serrated blade?

For serrated blades, use the tapered round side of the rod. Each tooth is sharpened individually, and the rod diameter is selected to fit the groove of the tooth.

Can fishing hooks be maintained with this sharpener?

Yes. The sharpening rod has a dedicated groove for fishing hooks. Place the hook in the groove and move it back and forth in a controlled manner until the point is restored.

Is sharpening oil required with the diamond rod?

No. Sharpening oil is not needed with this sharpener. After sharpening, remove metal particles from the rod with a dry cloth or soft brush.

When is Smith’s Diamond Retractable the right choice?

This diamond sharpener is a good choice when you need a compact tool for maintaining straight edges, serrated knives, and fishing hooks. The pen-shaped body fits conveniently in a pocket or gear bag, and the pocket clip keeps the sharpener easily accessible.

For restoring very dull or damaged edges, consider a sharpening stone with a coarser surface. If you want an extra smooth finish, use a finer sharpening tool or a ceramic finishing surface after the 400 grit diamond rod.

Expert recommendation

Before sharpening, check the condition of the edge and the sharpening angle recommended by the knife manufacturer. Extend the rod from the handle only to the required length and secure it firmly. For straight edges, use the semi-circular surface and move the sharpener from the heel to the tip of the blade with light pressure. Make equal and controlled strokes on both sides of the blade.

For serrated knives, do not drag the rod across the entire edge. Select the appropriate diameter from the tapered rod to fit the specific groove and sharpen each tooth individually. Since the 400 grit diamond surface removes metal quite efficiently, strong pressure is not necessary.

After use, wipe the rod clean with a dry cloth or soft brush. Do not use sharpening oil and always retract the cleaned rod fully into the aluminum body for storage. This keeps the diamond surface protected and prevents it from damaging other gear in your pocket or bag.

Compact diamond sharpener for every trip

Smith’s Diamond Retractable combines a 400 grit diamond surface, the ability to maintain straight and serrated blades, and a fishing hook sharpening groove in one small tool. It is a practical companion for hunters, anglers, or hikers who want to keep their cutting tools sharp even in outdoor conditions.
