Frequently asked questions

Can Super Blue be used on stainless steel?

No. The manufacturer specifically excludes stainless steel. The solution is intended for conventional polished or hardened steels, including certain steels containing nickel or chromium alloys.

Can it be applied over an existing blued finish?

Super Blue also affects existing bluing. Application should therefore be confined to the area being refinished, with adjacent surfaces protected where necessary. Test the result on an inconspicuous area before treating a visible surface.

Will one application immediately produce a uniform black finish?

Not necessarily. The final colour depends on the steel alloy, surface preparation, polish and application technique. Several controlled applications usually produce a more even and deeper result than leaving the chemical on the surface for too long.

Does Super Blue remove rust?

No. Rust, loose finish and contamination must be removed before bluing. The steel should be clean, even and completely free from oil and grease.

Does the treated surface require oil afterwards?

Yes. Cold bluing does not replace routine corrosion protection. Once the component has been thoroughly rinsed and dried, protect it with a suitable firearm oil or corrosion inhibitor.

Is 90 ml enough to refinish an entire firearm?

It may cover a larger surface, but this compact bottle is best suited to touch-ups and small components. Achieving a uniform finish over an entire firearm requires careful surface preparation and may justify the larger 960 ml bottle or professional hot bluing.

What safety precautions are required?

Super Blue is an acidic oxidizing chemical that can cause severe skin and eye damage and is toxic if swallowed or inhaled. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and protective clothing, and work outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area. Keep it away from children, ammunition, heat and combustible materials.

Recommended products

  • Birchwood Casey Super Blue 960 ml for frequent or higher-volume work

  • Birchwood Casey cleaner and degreaser for pre-bluing preparation

  • Birchwood Casey Blue & Rust Remover

  • Clean bluing applicators

  • Birchwood Casey Perma Blue Liquid 90 ml

  • Birchwood Casey Barricade corrosion protection

  • A chemical-resistant firearm maintenance mat

  • Nitrile gloves and suitable eye protection

When is Birchwood Casey Super Blue 90 ml the right choice?

This size is well suited to owners who need to repair individual scratches, worn edges or the finish on small steel components. It occupies little space in a maintenance kit and avoids buying a workshop-sized container for occasional use.

The 960 ml bottle is more economical for frequent refinishing and multiple components. Professional hot bluing may be preferable when a large surface requires the most uniform and durable possible finish.

Expert recommendation

Surface preparation determines the quality of the result. First verify that the firearm is completely unloaded and remove all ammunition from the work area. If practical, detach the component being treated. Remove rust and damaged finish, degrease the steel thoroughly and avoid touching the prepared surface with bare fingers.

Birchwood Casey’s general cold-bluing process calls for a thin application with a clean swab, a reaction time of no more than 30–60 seconds and an immediate, thorough rinse with cold water. Dry the component and repeat if a deeper colour is required. The directions printed on the product bottle always take priority.

Do not apply the chemical inside the bore or chamber, to locking surfaces, safety mechanisms or other precisely fitted internal components unless instructed by the firearm manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith. After the final rinse, dry the steel completely and protect it with firearm oil or a product such as Barricade.

Deep touch-up colour in a compact bottle

Birchwood Casey Super Blue 90 ml restores a deep blue-black appearance to worn steel surfaces without requiring heat. Its double-strength formula and compact bottle make it a practical choice for precise bluing repairs and refinishing small steel components.
