Frequently Asked Questions

How is Super Blue different from regular cold bluing agents?

Super Blue is a double-strength solution, designed especially for highly polished and hardened steel, as well as steel alloys containing nickel or chrome. The manufacturer describes its result as their darkest blue-black finish.

Is Super Blue suitable for stainless steel?

No. The manufacturer excludes stainless steel. A stainless part may react unevenly or not at all. Always make sure of the material before starting work.

Can the product be used on aluminum, brass, or bronze?

No. Use Aluminum Black for aluminum and Brass Black for brass, copper, and bronze. Super Blue is intended only for treating suitable steel parts.

Is Super Blue only for repairing scratches?

No. It can be used both for small spot repairs and for treating larger suitable steel surfaces. The uniformity of the cold bluing result depends greatly on surface preparation and even application. Achieving a result comparable to factory hot bluing may require professional treatment.

Is the 960 ml bottle suitable for home users?

It is suitable, but this size is primarily practical for gunsmiths, workshops, or users who frequently perform larger finishing jobs. For repairing individual small scratches, the 90 ml bottle is more economical and easier to handle.

How should the surface be prepared for bluing?

Remove old damaged finish, rust, oil, and dirt from the surface. Polish out scratches and surface defects as needed, clean the part thoroughly with a degreaser, and rinse. After the final cleaning, do not touch the metal with bare fingers, as skin oils cause stains and uneven bluing.

How should Super Blue be applied?

Before starting work, make sure the firearm is completely unloaded and all ammunition is removed from the work area. Apply the solution to a suitable clean steel surface with a fresh applicator, limiting it to the area being treated. According to the manufacturer's general cold bluing instructions, let the solution act for 30–60 seconds, but always follow the instructions on the bottle. Then immediately rinse the surface with cold water and dry.

Can the bluing solution damage existing finish?

Yes. The manufacturer warns that Super Blue also affects existing bluing. During spot repair, protect adjacent areas and apply the solution only to the desired area. Do not let it run uncontrolled over the part.

Can the process be repeated for a darker result?

Yes. After rinsing, drying, and, if necessary, very light polishing, the process can be repeated. If you use steel wool for polishing, the surface must be degreased again before the next treatment. Multiple controlled layers help achieve a more even darkness.

What should be done after the final treatment?

Rinse the part thoroughly with cold water, dry it completely, and cover the treated surface with rust protection oil. Birchwood Casey's finishing guide recommends saturating the surface with Barricade Rust Protection and allowing the finish to stabilize overnight.

Can Super Blue be applied to the inside of a gun barrel?

The product is intended for finishing external steel surfaces and suitable parts of firearms. Do not apply it to the inside of the barrel, chamber, locking surfaces, or internal mechanisms unless the gun manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith has specified it.

Does cold bluing protect steel from rust?

Bluing improves the appearance of the steel surface and, together with regular maintenance, helps reduce corrosion, but it does not replace rust protection oil. The finished surface must be maintained regularly, especially after use or exposure to moisture.

What protective equipment should be used?

Super Blue is a strong corrosive and oxidizing chemical that is toxic if swallowed or inhaled and causes severe skin and eye damage. Use gloves made of neoprene or other suitable chemical-resistant material, protective clothing, safety goggles, and a face shield. Work only outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area.

How should Super Blue be stored safely?

Keep the bottle tightly closed, locked, in a cool and well-ventilated place at a temperature below 40 °C. Keep the solution away from heat, sparks, flames, clothing, oils, and other flammable materials. Do not store the product where it is accessible to children.

What should be done in case of contact with the chemical?

If it gets into eyes or on skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water, remove contaminated clothing, and seek medical attention immediately. If vapors or mist are inhaled, go to fresh air and seek medical help. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting; contact a poison control center or doctor immediately.

When is Birchwood Casey Super Blue 960 ml the right choice?

Super Blue is the right choice when you need a stronger-than-standard cold bluing agent for treating highly polished, hardened, or nickel- and chrome-containing steel. The large bottle is especially suitable for workshops that regularly restore worn finishes on gun barrels and other steel parts.

For stainless steel, aluminum, brass, or bronze, a finishing agent appropriate for the material should be chosen. For small incidental scratches, the 90 ml bottle or a bluing pen may be more practical. Complete restoration of a valuable firearm is best entrusted to a professional gunsmith.

Expert recommendation

Super Blue is a strong solution and therefore application should not be rushed. Prepare your workspace, rinse water, clean applicators, and protective equipment before opening the bottle. Pour only the necessary small amount into a separate acid-resistant container and do not return used solution to the original bottle.

For an even result, clean the part repeatedly, treat an area of manageable size at a time, and do not let the solution act on the metal for more than one minute. After the final rinse, also dry threads, holes, and recesses, and apply rust protection oil to the entire treated surface. Before assembling or using the firearm, ensure no chemical residues remain.

Strong cold bluing for larger finishing jobs

Birchwood Casey Super Blue 960 ml gives highly polished and hardened steel a dark blue-black finish and is suitable both for repairing worn spots and for treating larger parts. The double-strength formula and large bottle make it a practical choice for gunsmiths or frequent workshop use.
