Frequently Asked Questions

Do the scissors cut braided line?

Yes. The manufacturer lists braided line as the intended cutting function. For a clean cut, place the line between the working parts of the blades, keep it slightly taut, and close the scissors in a single firm motion.

How do you use the split ring opener?

Insert the tool’s special tip between the layers of the split ring and open the ring just enough to fit the hook or lure attachment loop. Excessive bending may permanently damage the ring.

Is the tool suitable for use in saltwater?

Yes. According to the manufacturer, the tool is suitable for saltwater use and the steel has SaltShield96 protective treatment. After saltwater fishing, rinse the scissors with fresh water and dry them before storage.

Can the scissors be used to cut hooks or steel wire?

Not recommended. The manufacturer specifies the scissors are for braided line. For cutting hooks, steel wire, or thick metal wire, use a dedicated cutter designed for that strength.

When is the Westin Braid Scissor & Splitring Plier the right choice?

This 12.5 cm tool is ideal for anglers who want the most compact combination of braid scissors and a small split ring opener. It’s practical for making rigs, tidying leaders, and changing lure hooks.

For regularly opening large pike lure or strong sea lure rings, the 16 or 19 cm HD Split Ring Pliers may offer a better grip. For removing hooks deeply embedded in a fish’s mouth, use hook removal pliers of sufficient length.

Recommendations

When cutting braided line, keep the line slightly taut and make a single decisive cut. If the line end is uneven, check the cleanliness and closure of the blades. Do not use the scissors to cut hooks, steel wire, or thick wire, as hard material may damage the cutting edge.

When opening rings, use only the designated tip and avoid excessive bending of the ring. If the ring does not close fully after changing the hook, replace it with a new one. An open or deformed ring can break the connection under fish load.

After saltwater use, rinse the tool with fresh water and dry the joint and blades. SaltShield96 treatment and PTFE coating improve durability and ease of use, but regular maintenance is required for long service life.
