Frequently asked questions

What does suspending buoyancy mean?

A suspending lure is balanced to remain at approximately the same depth during a retrieve pause. Its actual behaviour may vary slightly depending on water temperature and the weight of the leader, snap and rings used.

What does SR mean in the model name?

SR stands for Shallow Runner, meaning a shallow-running lure. The manufacturer's stated running depth for this Jerkbite is 0.5–1.5 metres.

How do I use the Westin Jerkbite SR?

The lure can be retrieved at a steady speed or worked with short, sharper rod movements. During pauses between movements, the lure remains in the predator's strike zone. In cold water, try longer pauses.

What kind of rod is needed for a 47 g lure?

Use a jerkbait or pike fishing rod with a casting weight rating that comfortably covers a 47 g lure. A stiffer rod section helps impart controlled movements to the lure and manage larger fish.

When is the Westin Jerkbite SR the right choice?

The Jerkbite SR is best suited to shallow fishing areas where the lure needs to work above vegetation, rocks or other obstacles. Its suspending design allows for long pauses without the lure quickly rising to the surface or sinking to the bottom.

For covering deeper water, choose the Jerkbite DR or another deeper-diving lure. The Westin Swim Glidebait is better suited to achieving a wide, arcing side-to-side action, while the Platypus Crankbait provides a stronger rolling swimming action. A smaller Jerkbite is more suitable when targeting perch or zander with lighter tackle.

Our recommendation

For the best side-to-side darting action, use short rod movements and briefly allow some slack in the line between movements. A fully taut line can restrict the lure's movement, while too much slack reduces contact with the lure. Check the rhythm visually near the boat or shore before fishing.

In cold water, start with slower movements and longer pauses. In warmer water, you can use faster successive rod movements followed by an abrupt stop. The strike often occurs right at the beginning of the pause.

Keep in mind that a heavy leader, large snap or additional rings can turn a suspending lure into a slow-sinking one. Use a bite-resistant leader that is as light as possible but strong enough for pike. After contact with the bottom or catching a fish, check the sharpness of the hooks, the rings and the through-wire connections.
