Frequently asked questions

What does the lure's sinking buoyancy mean?

A sinking lure sinks deeper when the retrieve is paused. This allows you to wait until the lure reaches the desired depth before starting the retrieve and to fish closer to the bottom than with a floating lure.

How deep does the Westin Platypus Crankbait dive?

The manufacturer-stated working depth of the 19 cm model is 1–6 metres. The actual depth depends on the retrieve speed, line diameter, casting distance, rod position and, when trolling, the boat speed.

Does the lure have a rattle?

Yes. The lure contains an Ultra Sonic rattle ball that produces sound and vibration as it moves. This can help attract the attention of predatory fish in murky water and low-visibility conditions.

What tackle is needed for a 94 g lure?

Use a stronger pike rod with a casting weight rating that accommodates a 94 g lure with enough capacity to spare. You will also need a suitably strong reel, braided line, a bite-resistant pike trace and a reliable lure snap.

When is the Westin Platypus Crankbait 19 cm the right choice?

This 19 cm and 94 g sinking model is a good choice when the lure needs to reach deeper water quickly and remain in the fish's feeding zone during pauses in the retrieve. Its rattling construction is particularly well suited to murky water, fishing in windy weather and situations where fish need to find the lure by sound and vibration.

The 22 cm and 150 g Platypus Crankbait Large, which slowly rises to the surface, offers a larger profile and is better suited to targeting very large pike. The lighter 16 cm and 56 g Low Floating model is more convenient in shallower water, on longer fishing days and when fishing with lighter tackle.

Our recommendations

Use this lure with a rod whose maximum casting weight leaves sufficient capacity for a 94 g lure. In addition to the lure's weight, the trace, snap and the lure's air resistance affect the load generated during casting. Always check the condition of the knot, snap and trace before making powerful casts.

The advantage of a sinking model is the ability to choose your fishing depth. After casting, keep the line under control and count the lure's sinking time to find the depth where the fish are holding. Start with a steady retrieve and add short pauses or rod pulls. Keep in mind that the lure continues to sink during pauses, increasing the risk of snagging on the bottom in very shallow or snag-filled areas.

When trolling, adjust the working depth by changing the length of line let out and the boat speed. After contact with the bottom or catching a fish, check the hook sharpness, split rings and lure body.

Sinking lure for large pike in deeper water

The Westin Platypus Crankbait 19 cm 94 g combines a large profile, rattling construction and a working depth of up to six metres. It is a practical choice for anglers looking for a strong sinking pike lure suitable for both casting and trolling.
