Frequently asked questions

What does Low Floating buoyancy mean?

A slow-floating lure does not rise quickly to the surface when the retrieve is paused. The Platypus Crankbait Large continues to move gently in the water for a moment before slowly rising.

How deep does the Westin Platypus Crankbait Large dive?

The manufacturer-stated running depth is 2–7 metres. The actual depth depends on the retrieve speed, line diameter, casting distance, rod position and, when trolling, boat speed.

Does the lure have a rattle?

No. It is deliberately designed to be silent, making it well suited to catching cautious pike or pike living in heavily fished waters.

What equipment is needed for a 150 g lure?

Use a strong rod for large lures with a casting weight rating that includes at least 150 g. You will also need a suitably strong reel, line, bite-resistant pike trace and a high-strength snap.

When is the Westin Platypus Crankbait Large the right choice?

This 22 cm, 150 g model is best suited to targeting large pike in deeper open water, around drop-offs or along depth contours. Its silent construction is useful in waters where fish are accustomed to rattling lures, while its slow rise allows for long pauses.

A smaller, lighter lure is a better choice in shallow water, where casting space is limited, or when your spinning gear is not designed for 150 g lures. A fast-sinking model is preferable when the lure needs to reach the water layer near the bottom immediately or stay at a consistent depth in strong winds and while trolling quickly.

Our recommendations

Before fishing, check that the rod's casting weight rating, reel, line, trace and snap can withstand the dynamic load of a 150 g lure. The load generated during casting is greater than the lure's static weight, so avoid using equipment with a maximum casting weight of exactly 150 g.

Start with a slow, steady retrieve and watch the lure's movement near the boat or shore. The Platypus works well even at low speed, and pauses in the retrieve allow it to rise slowly. This change of direction can provoke a pike following the lure to strike. When trolling, start by adjusting the length of line let out and the boat speed to find a suitable running depth.

After contact with the bottom or catching a fish, check the hooks for sharpness and inspect the rings and connections. When casting a large lure, always make sure there is enough clear space behind and beside you.
