Frequently Asked Questions

How many cartridges does the Browning BL-22 Grade 2 MG9 hold?

The tubular magazine holds nine .22 LR cartridges. Including one in the chamber, the rifle's maximum technical capacity is 9+1, provided this is allowed by use case and applicable regulations.

What does MG9 in the model name mean?

MG9 designates the nine-round magazine configuration for the European market. Other versions of the BL-22 family have been produced with different magazine capacities.

Can the rifle use .22 Short and .22 Long cartridges?

The BL-22 is designed to operate with .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 LR cartridges. However, always use only ammunition that matches your firearm's caliber markings and is permitted by the Browning user manual.

Can the Browning BL-22 be fitted with an optical sight?

Yes. The receiver is grooved to accept 3/8" tip-off style scope rings. Mounts and optics must be selected separately and must fit the BL-22 receiver grooves.

Does the barrel have threading for a suppressor?

No. This configuration does not have factory muzzle threading. If suppressor use is important, consider a factory-threaded .22 LR bolt-action rifle.

Is the BL-22 suitable for left-handed shooters?

The straight and symmetrical stock suits both right- and left-handed users. Lever action is operated from beneath the rifle, and spent cases eject to the side.

How does the Grade 2 differ from the standard BL-22 version?

The main differences in the Grade 2 version are the higher quality walnut and the engraved steel receiver. The basic mechanism and short 33-degree lever throw are shared by all BL-22 models.

What are the requirements for purchasing this rifle?

This is a restricted civilian firearm. You must have the appropriate acquisition permit and comply with firearms law and the seller's sales procedures.

When is the Browning BL-22 Grade 2 MG9 the right choice?

The BL-22 Grade 2 is suitable for shooters who want a low-recoil .22 LR rifle but prefer classic lever-action operation over bolt-action or semi-automatic designs. The short 33-degree lever throw, light weight, and compact overall length make it enjoyable to use both with open sights and light optics.

A factory-threaded bolt-action .22 LR rifle is a better alternative if suppressor use, benchrest accuracy, or mounting heavier optics are the main priorities. A semi-automatic model may be better suited for dynamic sport shooting. The BL-22 Grade 2 stands out for its traditional handling, quality wood finish, and distinctive engraved steel receiver.

Recommendations

For your first shooting sessions, use open sights and get familiar with the 33-degree lever throw and external hammer operation. The lever must be cycled fully, but the mechanism should not be forced. If a cartridge does not feed smoothly, stop and check the firearm according to the user manual.

When mounting optics, choose low and secure mounts designed for the BL-22 3/8" receiver grooves. A compact rimfire scope preserves the rifle's good balance and does not make the classic lever-action unnecessarily heavy.

When using the tubular magazine, always double-check that the rifle is completely unloaded before cleaning, transporting, or storing. After use, wipe blued metal surfaces with a dry or lightly oiled cloth, and avoid excess oil on the mechanism and wooden parts.
