Frequently asked questions

Does the CZ 457 American have open sights?

No. This model has neither a front nor rear open sight. It is intended for use with an optical sight mounted to the 11 mm dovetail on the receiver.

Is a riflescope included?

No. The optical sight and its mounting hardware must be purchased separately. The mounts must be compatible with both the receiver’s 11 mm dovetail and the tube diameter of the chosen riflescope.

Which scope mounts fit this rifle?

The receiver has an 11 mm dovetail. A compatible set of dovetail rings or a suitable Weaver or Picatinny adapter may be used. The manufacturer recommends that scope mounting and sighting-in be entrusted to a qualified gunsmith.

Is the muzzle threaded?

Yes. The barrel has a 1/2×20 muzzle thread. This is different from the 1/2×28 thread found on many other firearms, so compatibility must be checked before selecting a muzzle accessory.

Can the trigger be adjusted?

Yes. The standard trigger mechanism has an adjustment range of 8–15 N and is factory-set between 11.1 and 14 N. Pre-travel and overtravel can also be adjusted. Any adjustment must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and the unloaded rifle must be thoroughly safety-checked afterwards.

What is the benefit of the 60° bolt rotation?

The bolt handle requires only 60 degrees of rotation to unlock the action. This provides additional clearance between the bolt handle and a low-mounted riflescope compared with a traditional 90° action.

Can CZ 455 magazines be used?

According to the CZ instruction manual, CZ 457 barrels and magazines use the same interface as the CZ 455 platform. The magazine must still be suitable for the .22 LR calibre and the specific rifle configuration.

Can the barrel and calibre be changed?

The CZ 457 uses a modular design that accepts compatible barrel-conversion sets. Any barrel or calibre change must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use the correct components and comply with all applicable licensing and registration requirements.

How does the American differ from the Varmint?

The American has a 630 mm light-profile barrel and a traditional straight-comb walnut stock. The Varmint uses a heavier barrel that is better suited to supported precision shooting and longer shot strings, but it also increases the rifle’s weight.

When is the CZ 457 American the right choice?

The CZ 457 American is suited to shooters who want a traditionally styled .22 LR bolt-action rifle with a modern adjustable trigger, 60° bolt lift and provision for an optical sight. Its long, light-profile barrel and walnut stock make it a versatile option for range shooting and lawful hunting use.

Choose a Varmint version when supported precision shooting and a heavier barrel are the priority. The CZ 457 Lux or Premium is a better option when open sights are required. A shorter-barrelled model may be preferable when compact overall dimensions are more important.

Expert recommendation

Because the American version has no open sights, include a suitable riflescope and 11 mm dovetail mounts in the initial setup. When selecting the mount height, confirm that the objective lens clears the barrel and that the bolt handle has sufficient operating clearance.

.22 LR rifles can produce noticeably different results with different ammunition types and production lots. Test several suitable cartridges at a legally authorised shooting range and select the load that provides the most consistent grouping and reliable feeding for the intended use.

Trigger adjustment affects firearm safety. If the necessary knowledge and measuring equipment are not available, have the adjustment performed by a qualified gunsmith. After installing the scope or adjusting the trigger, check the unloaded rifle for correct operation and confirm the actual point of impact at the range.
