Frequently Asked Questions

How many cartridges does the SXP Defender High Capacity hold?

According to the manufacturer and Jahipaun, the capacity is up to 7+1 cartridges. Capacity may decrease when using longer 12/76 cases.

Can a red dot sight be installed on this firearm?

The receiver is prepared for optic mount installation. The specific base and sight must be chosen separately and must withstand the recoil of a 12-gauge firearm.

Is the barrel rifled?

No. This configuration has a 510 mm Back-Bored smoothbore barrel, not a rifled slug barrel.

What does Back-Bored barrel mean?

Back-Bored means the smoothbore barrel has a larger than usual internal diameter. The design aims to provide a more uniform shot pattern and to reduce deformation and felt recoil during firing.

Can 12/70 cartridges be used in a 12/76 firearm?

Yes, you can use 12/70 cartridges that comply with the firearm’s markings and manufacturer’s instructions. 12/89 cartridges are not suitable for this firearm.

What requirements apply when purchasing?

This is a restricted civilian firearm. A proper acquisition or firearms license and valid identification are required for purchase and transfer.

When is the Winchester SXP Defender High Capacity the right choice?

This model suits users who want a pump-action shotgun with a larger tubular magazine and a relatively compact 510 mm barrel for sporting target shooting. The standard composite stock offers a more classic grip compared to the pistol-grip Xtrem Dark Earth.

For a configuration with adjustable cheek rest, Ghost Ring sights, and pre-installed Picatinny rails, the Xtrem Dark Earth is more suitable. If precision shooting with slugs is the focus, choose the rifled SXP Xtrem Defender Rifled.

Recommendations

Note that the stated 7+1 capacity applies with specific case lengths. Using longer cartridges will reduce the magazine’s ammunition capacity. Always check the firearm’s markings, cartridge length, and any magazine capacity restrictions applicable to your specific shooting sport or hunting regulations before use.

To operate a pump-action shotgun reliably, the loading stroke must be forceful and fully completed. Practice this only with a safely checked, unloaded firearm and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After shooting, clean the barrel, chamber, bolt, elevator, and action bars. If installing a red dot sight, check the screw tightness and point of impact at a proper shooting range after mounting.
