Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bore Boss .17 suitable for .17 HMR rifles?

Yes, this model is designed for .17 caliber bores and is generally suitable for .17 HMR rifles. However, always follow the maintenance instructions provided by the specific firearm manufacturer before use.

Can the same cleaning cord be used for .17 WSM and .17 Hornet rifles?

If the barrel caliber is .17 and the manufacturer allows the use of a pull-through cleaning tool with a phosphor bronze brush, it can be used for various .17 caliber firearms. The cartridge name does not change the nominal bore diameter.

Is the Bore Boss .17 suitable for a 4.5 mm air rifle?

Suitability should not be assumed automatically. This product is designed for .17 caliber firearms, and the construction of the air rifle barrel, seals, muzzle device, or suppressor may require a different cleaning tool.

Does the cleaning cord replace a cleaning rod?

The Bore Boss is suitable for quick and regular cleaning. Thorough copper residue removal, chamber cleaning, or detailed barrel inspection may require a rod, patch holder, and specialized cleaning agent.

Can the cable be pulled through a suppressor mounted on the firearm?

The suppressor or other muzzle device should be removed before cleaning, unless the manufacturer's instructions state otherwise. The cable must move freely and must not snag inside the device.

What should I do if the cable moves with great difficulty?

Do not force it. Check the caliber, cable direction, bore cleanliness, and possible obstructions. Do not use damaged or incorrectly sized cleaning tools.

When is the Real Avid Bore Boss .17 Cal the right choice?

The Bore Boss .17 Cal is ideal for quick cleaning of .17 caliber rifles after a day at the range or hunting. The compact Flex-Case keeps the thin cable protected and reduces tangling with other gear.

If your goal is thorough copper residue removal, separate chamber cleaning, or barrel condition assessment, use a rigid or coated cleaning rod with caliber-appropriate patches and chemicals.

Recommendations

Due to the small bore of the .17 caliber, we recommend checking the condition of the cable and brush especially carefully before each use. A bent tip, loose wire, or dried dirt can more easily snag in a narrow barrel. The cable should move smoothly through the bore without excessive force.

Use only a small amount of suitable cleaning agent and do not store a wet cleaning cord in the closed Flex-Case. After use, clean the braided section and allow it to dry completely. For small calibers, checking the correct size is especially important: the .17 Cal Bore Boss must not be replaced with a similar-looking but larger caliber cleaning cord. Before maintenance, remove the magazine and ammunition and check the chamber.

The Real Avid Bore Boss .17 Cal combines a caliber-specific brush, braided cleaning section, and 81 cm pull cable in a compact storage handle. It is a convenient addition to any .17 caliber rifle range or hunting kit.
