Frequently Asked Questions

Which firearms is the 23 cm Smart Rod suitable for?

The rod is designed for .22–.45 caliber handguns. Suitability also depends on the barrel length, access to the chamber, and the size of the brush or jag used.

Is the rod suitable for a 9 mm pistol?

Yes. 9 mm falls within the manufacturer’s specified .22–.45 caliber range. You must use a brush, jag, or mop designed for 9 mm barrels.

Is a cleaning brush included?

No. The set includes a carbon fiber cleaning rod and a wall-mountable holder. The caliber-specific cleaning tip must be selected separately.

Why does the cleaning rod need to rotate?

The rifling in the barrel is spiral. The rotational bearing allows the brush or jag to naturally follow the direction of the rifling and reduces unnecessary lateral pressure.

Is the 23 cm rod suitable for a rifle?

This model is intended for handguns. For a long rifle barrel, choose the 91 cm or another appropriately sized Smart Rod.

When is the Real Avid Smart Rod 23 cm the right choice?

This model is suitable for pistol or revolver owners who want a compact, rigid, and highly controllable one-piece cleaning rod. The 23 cm length is more convenient for handguns than a long rifle rod, and the vertical handle allows you to push the brush or jag with precision.

For long barrels, carbines, or rifles, choose the 91 cm Smart Rod. For quick field maintenance, a cleaning cord may be more compact, but for thorough cleaning, a rod provides better control when using various brushes and patches.

Our recommendation

We recommend selecting a brush or jag that matches the caliber of your firearm and ensuring the accessory thread is 8-32. Before cleaning, remove the magazine, fully unload the firearm, and check the chamber both visually and physically. Keep ammunition away from your work area.

If the firearm’s design allows, insert the cleaning rod from the chamber end and guide it toward the muzzle. Do not bend the rod sharply or use force if the brush or jag becomes stuck. The rotational bearing must move freely so that the cleaning tip can follow the rifling. After use, wipe the carbon fiber rod and handle clean of any chemical residue. Store the rod vertically in the included wall holder to avoid pressure or weight from other objects.

Highly controllable carbon fiber cleaning rod for handguns

The Real Avid Bore-Max Smart Rod combines a 23 cm carbon fiber rod, rotational bearing, 8-32 thread, and a comfortable vertical handle. It’s a practical base for using caliber-specific brushes, jags, and cleaning patches on .22–.45 caliber handguns.
