Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Rabbit Frenzy diaphragm call used?

The call is placed against the roof of the mouth so that the latex reeds are facing forward. Sound is produced with directed airflow, and pitch and volume are controlled by tongue position, mouth pressure, and blowing force.

What sound does the Rabbit Frenzy produce?

The dual-reed, 45-degree cut construction is designed to create the high and agitated distress scream of a young rabbit. The actual sound depends on the user's technique and control of airflow.

Is the diaphragm call suitable for beginners?

Yes, but achieving a clean and consistent sound requires practice. Beginners should start with short sounds using low air pressure, and only then move on to longer and more intense distress sequences.

How does a diaphragm call differ from a regular hand call?

The diaphragm call is placed entirely in the mouth and leaves both hands free. This allows for flexible changes in pitch and rhythm, but requires more practice than a fixed-tone hand call.

How should the Rabbit Frenzy call be cleaned and stored?

Rinse the call after use with cool or lukewarm clean water and let it dry completely before storage. Avoid hot water, strong cleaning agents, and direct heat, as these can damage the latex reeds.

When is the Johnny Stewart Rabbit Frenzy the right choice?

Rabbit Frenzy is suitable for hunters who want to produce a high and emotional rabbit distress call while keeping both hands free. The diaphragm call is especially practical in situations where an approaching predator might notice even the slightest hand movement. An experienced user can vary the pitch, volume, and rhythm of the sound with airflow and mouth pressure.

If you want the simplest and most immediately repeatable sound, a fixed-tone hand call might be more suitable. The Johnny Stewart Open Reed offers a wider range of sounds and is easier to visually check without removing it from the mouth, while the greatest advantage of the Rabbit Frenzy is its completely hands-free use.

Expert tip

Before using in the field, practice with the diaphragm call in short series. Place the call against the roof of your mouth so that the curved part is at the back and the reeds are facing forward. Start with low air pressure—blowing too hard may break the sound or make it unnaturally sharp. If the call feels too wide, the outer tape strip can be carefully trimmed to fit your palate, but do not cut the reeds or their frame.

In the field, start with a quieter sequence, then pause and pay special attention to the downwind direction. A nearby predator may react quickly, and the advantage of a hands-free call is most evident when excess movement must be avoided. Keep the call in a clean, ventilated case, rinse it after use, and let it dry completely. Latex is a consumable material: if the sound becomes unstable or the reeds' edges are damaged, the call should be replaced.
