Frequently asked questions

Is the IR2-940 a standalone night-vision device?

No. It is an infrared illumination module that improves the image produced by a compatible digital night-vision device. It does not contain the camera, display or eyepiece required for standalone observation.

Which PARD devices are compatible with the IR2-940?

Available product information lists the PARD Night Stalker 4K 2.0 and Night Stalker 5K eX. The IR2 should not be treated as a universal PARD illuminator. Night Stalker 4K eX, Night Stalker Mini, NV007 and other models may require IR1, TL3 or IL1 accessories instead.

What is the difference between 940 nm and 850 nm illumination?

A 940 nm illuminator produces less visible red glow and is therefore better suited to discreet observation. An 850 nm model generally provides a brighter digital night-vision image and greater practical range, but its emitter is easier to notice at close distances.

Is 940 nm illumination completely invisible?

The infrared beam itself cannot be seen by the unaided human eye, although a very faint red glow may be visible at the emitter in darkness. The 940 nm version is highly discreet, but it should not be described as completely invisible in every situation.

Does the illuminator always reach 350 metres?

No. The 350-metre figure is the manufacturer-specified maximum illumination distance. Practical performance depends on the night-vision sensor, weather, humidity, beam setting, subject reflectivity and surrounding light.

How should the beam be adjusted?

Use a wider beam and lower output for searching at close distances. Narrow the beam and increase the output when observing farther away. Excessive illumination can reflect from nearby grass, branches, mist or rain and reduce the useful detail visible on the display.

Can the IR2-940 be used with a thermal imager?

No. Thermal imagers detect heat radiation and do not require an infrared illuminator. The IR2-940 is intended for digital night vision, where the CMOS sensor forms an image from reflected near-infrared light.

Does the IR2-940 include a laser rangefinder?

No. The IR2-940 is an infrared illuminator only. PARD modules combining infrared illumination with laser rangefinding use a different model designation, such as IL1. Some retailer descriptions incorrectly combine the specifications of these products.

When is the PARD IR2-940 the right choice?

The IR2-940 is a suitable choice for owners of a PARD Night Stalker 4K 2.0 or Night Stalker 5K eX who want discreet supplementary illumination in darkness. It is particularly useful at short and medium observation distances or when monitoring cautious wildlife.

Choose an 850 nm version when maximum practical range and the brightest possible night-vision image are more important than concealment. Always check the complete model designation of the host device because different Night Stalker generations use different illuminator and rangefinder modules.

Expert recommendation

Begin with the lowest output level and a wide beam. Increase the power or narrow the beam only when the observation distance requires it. This reduces infrared reflection from nearby vegetation, mist or precipitation, which can make the screen brighter while concealing useful detail.

Because infrared radiation is not visible to the unaided eye, never look directly into an operating emitter or point it towards the eyes of people or animals. Install and remove the module according to the Night Stalker instructions and clean its optical element only with suitable lens-cleaning materials.

Discreet supplementary light for digital night vision

The PARD IR2-940 adds an adjustable 5 W infrared beam to a compatible Night Stalker device. Its three power levels, focusable beam, specified 350-metre illumination distance and compact 49 g construction allow the user to adapt night-vision illumination to the terrain and observation distance.
