The PARD Osprey 4K OS4-25/50/LRF is a multispectral observation binocular combining a 256 × 192 thermal channel, a 4K day/night channel, a 1,000 m laser rangefinder and a detachable 940 nm infrared illuminator. The thermal image assists with rapid heat-source detection, after which the 4K channel can be used to examine visible detail and the surrounding environment.

Frequently asked questions

What does multispectral mean?

The binocular uses two imaging technologies. Its thermal channel responds to temperature differences, while the 4K channel uses visible and infrared light. A heat source can therefore be located thermally and then examined through a more natural-looking day or night image.

Does the thermal channel require the IR illuminator?

No. Thermal imaging detects emitted heat and does not need visible or infrared illumination. The 940 nm illuminator is used with the digital night-vision channel in complete darkness.

What is the benefit of a 940 nm illuminator?

Its glow is less noticeable to the human eye than that of an 850 nm illuminator. This makes it more discreet, although a comparable 940 nm illuminator generally provides less brightness and range than an 850 nm version.

Can an animal be identified reliably at 1,200 m?

Usually not. The 1,200 m figure is a thermal detection distance, meaning that a suitably large heat source may be noticed. Reliable identification takes place at a substantially shorter distance and depends on the weather, target size and observer experience.

Does the binocular record 4K video?

No. The day/night sensor has a resolution of 3840 × 2160, but the specified photograph and video recording resolution is 1920 × 1080.

Does OIS stabilise the thermal image?

PARD specifies optical image stabilisation for the digital night-vision channel. Stabilisation of the thermal channel is not listed.

How long does the battery last?

The Osprey’s 256 × 192 thermal channel is primarily an efficient detection tool, and its 25 mm objective provides a field of view 12.3 m wide at 100 m.

Expert recommendation

Begin scanning with the thermal channel and apply digital magnification only after locating a relevant heat source. Digital zoom enlarges existing pixels but does not add native sensor detail. Switch to the 4K day/night channel for closer examination and use the laser rangefinder to establish the actual distance.

In complete darkness, align the 940 nm illuminator with the observed area and use only as much output as necessary. Nearby branches, grass and reflective surfaces can return infrared light into the sensor and overexpose the night-vision image.

Adjust the interpupillary distance and both eyepiece dioptres before extended use. Carry a charged spare battery in cold conditions or when recording extensively. Keep both objective lenses clean and protect the sensors and optics from intense sunlight, laser radiation and scratching.
