Frequently asked questions

Is the PARD Leopard 640 eX a thermal weapon sight?

No. The Leopard 640 eX is a handheld observation monocular. It is intended for locating and observing wildlife, terrain and other heat sources rather than for mounting on a firearm.

How far can the device detect a heat source?

The manufacturer specifies a detection range of up to 2600 metres for the 50 mm version. Detection means noticing a suitably sized heat source; it does not mean that the species or other important details can necessarily be identified at that distance. Practical recognition and identification distances depend on the subject, weather, thermal contrast and user experience.

What is the range of the laser rangefinder?

The integrated laser rangefinder has a specified range of up to 1000 metres. Its practical performance depends on the size and reflectivity of the subject, measurement angle, precipitation, fog and other environmental conditions.

How does the 50 mm version differ from the 35 mm model?

The 50 mm model provides higher 3.7× base magnification, a specified detection range of up to 2600 metres and a narrower 15.4 × 12.3 m field of view at 100 metres. It is better suited to long-range observation in open terrain. The 35 mm version provides a wider field of view and can be easier to use in woodland or at shorter distances.

Does the thermal monocular require an infrared illuminator?

No. A thermal imager detects heat radiation and does not require visible or infrared illumination. It can be used in complete darkness as well as during daylight.

Can it see through glass, walls or dense vegetation?

No. Ordinary glass reflects or blocks much of the infrared radiation used by a thermal imager, so the device normally shows the glass surface and reflected temperatures. It cannot see through walls, and dense vegetation can partially or completely obscure a heat source.

Is a memory card required?

A memory card is not required for normal observation. A microSD card with a capacity of up to 128 GB is required to store photographs, 1280 × 1280 video and audio recordings. Check whether a card is included by the retailer.

When is the PARD Leopard 640 eX 50 mm LRF the right choice?

The Leopard 640 eX 50 mm is well suited to users whose main priority is scanning fields, clearings and other open areas. Its 50 mm objective, 3.7× base magnification and specified 2600-metre detection range favour longer observation distances and closer examination of distant heat sources.

For dense woodland or short-distance searching, a 35 mm thermal monocular may be easier to use because of its wider field of view. A thermal binocular may provide greater comfort during prolonged two-eye observation. The Leopard’s advantage is its combination of one-handed monocular operation, integrated rangefinding and recording functions.

Expert recommendation

Set the eyepiece dioptre using the on-screen symbols before focusing the objective on the observed subject. This helps prevent an incorrectly adjusted eyepiece from making either the display or the thermal image appear soft. Use digital zoom selectively at longer distances because it enlarges the displayed pixels without adding new sensor detail.

The narrower field of view provided by the 50 mm lens is useful for studying distant subjects, but it requires slower and more systematic scanning when searching a large area. Select the scene mode to suit the environment and use the rangefinder after locating the subject. Before entering the field, check the battery charge, available memory-card capacity and cleanliness of the objective lens.

Detailed long-range thermal observation

The PARD Leopard 640 eX 50 mm LRF combines a sensitive 640 × 512 thermal sensor, a long-range-oriented 50 mm objective and an integrated 1000-metre laser rangefinder. Its high-resolution OLED display, recording functions and battery life of up to seven hours make it a capable handheld observation instrument for demanding users.
